Maintaining Essential Business Operations During Disaster Orders
Updated: Mar 25, 2020
The “stay-at-home” orders for Harris and other counties across America permits work essential to the operation and maintenance of critical infrastructure, including but not limited to, food service, janitorial, security, maintenance, manufacturing and production to support other critical business.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security defines essential operations and employees for infrastructure control and sustainability as anyone who provides the following services: directors and administrators, medical and healthcare, telecommunications, information technology systems, defense, food services and agriculture, transportation and logistics, energy, water and wastewater, waste management, construction, facilities maintenance, law enforcement, security services, and public works.
Although some states have implemented an online application to operate as an essential business (NY, CT, and MA) most areas across the country are allowing a letter of certification, as an essential employee, for travel to and from workplaces.
